There’s no doubt that at some point in your life, you’ve encountered that one individual who smells like they jumped into a pool filled with perfume before they showed up for work, making their smell so overpowering that you can’t escape it and sometimes, you end up smelling like them too. But this isn’t their fault. Ask different people and you’ll get different answers as to how they think you should apply your perfume as well as how much perfume you should apply, and sure, that’s a subjective topic where everyone has their own take on the methods, but today we’ll take a few pieces of advice from people in the perfume industry as to how they think you should wear your fragrance.
According to one award-winning perfumer with one of the most illustrious portfolios of incredible fragrances in his past said a few things about how he thinks people should apply their perfume, one of the first ones is to spray, and not rub. He goes on to say that, when you rub your skin together after applying perfume, you end up heating your skin which would then change the composition of the chemical compounds found in the perfume, making it change its characteristics and altering its scent, and more often than not, dulling its edge. This would mean that by doing this, you didn’t end up getting the fragrance that you paid money for.
Another thing that people do wrong, according to yet another perfumer, is that people tend to use too much perfume on their bodies and end up smelling so strongly of it that it can honestly induce a nosebleed to anyone standing nearby. He goes on to say that you most likely don’t want to cover every inch of your skin with perfume, rather, you should only wear enough perfume to give a hint of fragrance, instead of using the entire bottle. He goes on to say that what you are looking for, in terms of fragrance, is a lightly-scented skin and not an overly perfumed one. This is a common mistake that people make either to hide unpleasant smells or just to make sure that the scent lasts longer on their bodies. This is not a great idea since not only do you waste your bottle of perfume when you use a lot of it instead of using it sparingly. Think of it this way, perfume is like salt. You need a certain amount of it to enhance the flavors of your food, but not the entire container of salt. The perfect amount of seasoning sometimes requires you to only add a few pinches here and there and fragrances are the same.
Everyone has their own theories as to where and how much perfume to add, but follow the advice provided above and not only will your bottle last a lot longer due to the sheer reduction in the amount that you use, but also decreases the likelihood that you’ll cause a nosebleed in the office every time you step in.
