In the world of perfumes, nothing seems to be quite as confusing as having to choose between an EDT and an EDP. These are the two types of perfumes that you’re most likely to find in most perfume stores no matter where you are. So why are these two as confusing as they are? Well, for one, they’re in French, and though it is admittedly a very beautiful language, it’s no great surprises that not everyone speaks French, ergo the confusion.
What is an EDP?
Well, let’s try to break it down. We’ll start with EDP. Short for Eau De Parfum, it’s a French term which means “perfume water”, not quite as fancy as it sounds in its native French, does it? That aside, the term simply serves to separate the EDP from its EDT cousin with the difference being in how much more concentrated one of them is when compared to the other. EDP tends to contain more concentrated fragrance oil when compared to its EDT cousin which we will shortly get into. This means that EDP tends to have a much deeper, richer fragrance which will also last a little bit longer than its more diluted cousin. That being said, however, it’s not exactly the most concentrated type of perfume, since there’s another type of perfume that’s actually a whole lot more concentrated than this one. Also, thanks to its higher concentration of fragrance, it’s important for the user to take caution when applying their favorite EDP as it’s very easy to put too much on, especially if they’re used to applying EDT.
What is an EDT?
Next up is the EDT. As mentioned in the point above, the EDT is the less-concentrated cousin of the ubiquitous EDP. This type of perfume is easily found in any perfume store that you find yourself in. EDT is also a French term, Eau De Toilette, this does not mean that it’s made for use in toilets, however, as it holds a different meaning entirely. This type of perfume is great as it has a lighter characteristic when compared to its EDP cousin, making it much easier to apply and seems to work in various scenarios when you’re not exactly sure which perfume to wear. You can’t really go wrong with a bottle of EDT in your collection.
Are there other types of perfumes?
Now that that’s out of the way, it’s also quite important to mention that there are other types of perfumes other than the ones mentioned above like, Parfum, EDC, as well as Eau Fraiche, each with different concentrations of fragrance oils which you can choose from to fit your preferences and your needs. Ultimately though, no matter which one you choose to get, make sure to pay close attention to how much you’re applying to your skin at any given time, as different concentration levels mean different strengths. You wouldn’t want to apply the same amount of Parfum on your skin as you would your EDT as it would most definitely be too much to handle at one time. Not paying attention to how much fragrance you’re applying to your skin is also one of the leading causes of nosebleeds in the office.
