How to Make Perfumes Smell More Natural?

Perhaps one of the most hotly debated topics since the inception of mankind, how “natural” one’s fragrance of choice has always been associated with quality and luxury. But now that we live in an age where “natural” is deemed to be “better”, it has become more important, for perfume manufacturers especially, to know how to make sure that your perfumes smell more “natural”.

What makes a perfume smell natural?

First thing’s first, there are no better methods of making a “natural” smelling perfumes than actually making your perfumes from natural ingredients. This is because natural ingredients tend to not be as “pure” as synthetic compounds where everything is made to be as precise as possible. It’s these impurities that ultimately make up the impression of having one bottle smell more natural than the next.

Why synthetic isn’t a bad word

Synthetic fragrances don’t always mean that these fragrances come out of a conveyor belt in a mass-produced setting in a factory, in fact, there’s an argument to be made for artificial fragrances, but that’s an entirely separate article. Getting back to making your perfumes smell more natural however, it’s not that complicated, but not that easy either. You see, the characteristics of a natural fragrance are what separates it from other fragrances, for one thing, natural ingredients, thanks to the impurities in the compounds themselves, will produce a much more complex fragrance when they’re blended together. One thing perfumers can do to make their perfumes smell more natural is to add that additional layer of complexity into their fragrances by adding other compounds that accentuate the main body of the fragrance. For instance, when making a fragrance that mainly smells like oranges, perfumers can add fragrances that amplify their fragrances. For example, when making an orange fragrance, perfumers can blend their fragrance with other citrus scents like lemons to achieve not only a stronger citrus fragrance but also to amplify the strength of the orange scent while adding a layer of complexity that is normally only found in more natural fragrances.

Why synthetic perfumes are actually better

Not only will this make your fragrance smell much more natural even if it’s entirely artificial, but will also help give your fragrances a certain level of depth in addition to a more pleasing smell that is not as underwhelming as a single-bodied fragrance would. You see, though natural fragrances are great since they have this layer of complexity seemingly by default, they do have the tendency to not last as long as you’d like them to, which, in the long run, will mean that you’ll have to apply more of it on your skin to achieve the same effect that you would from a synthetic bottle of fragrance.

The bottom line, however, as long as you make sure that you blend your fragrances, you’re sure to make your fragrance not smell artificial because you see, what ultimately separates a natural fragrance from a synthetic one is complexity. Perfumes that are made with a single body in mind will result in a fragrance that smells more like hand soap rather than a basket of fresh apples. This is why it’s important to add other fragrances to add complexity to the fragrance itself.
